Imperfect : A Scifi Themed Noir That is a Must Watch.

Imperfect

Today for short film theater we return to world of film noir. And this time it’s a science fiction. So yeah. I found a fun little genre blender. This one is called Imperfect which is written and direction by Micheal Tuitter back in 2012.

So what is it about? It’s about the world of fashion where perfection is hard to fin. Every model has to be photo shopped after each shoot. To reduce the work, they started using synthetic woman for the shoot. Because of this, there is a great issue. Laura the world’s number one model is actually trying to throw the robots out of the business.

The film follows Brendan Holloway. A photographer who grows close to a new mute girl who is Laura’s stand in. But when Laura doesn’t come in on one day, he finds her murdered and could have sworn he saw the new girl Emma at the crime scene running away. This seems impossible because it would mean Emma was in two places at one. So begins the noir mystery of who killed Laura.

The good? Cinematography and acting was fantastic. The writing and scifi twist is wonderful. And it really does have a noir feel.

The bad? The film is not action packed. Also given the twenty five minute length so people may not like ice slow burn, and suspense as others. Also this is a noir film set in modern day, which seems jarring at times when he’s talking a bus ride or walking the city streets. Given the aesthetic your brain is left expecting the 1940’s an all times.

Overall, this is a fantastic smart well-made film. Everything about it is near perfect so if you like noir, this a must watch.

Ranger : A Wonderful Fantasy Killed by Bad CGI

Ranger

Today we have a larger short film. This piece if almost thirty minutes long. And this is a JRR Tolkien middle Earth tale loosely based on the Simarillion, which is a book I never read but it didn’t keep me from watching a fantasy film. So we’re going to review this film, Ranger. The film is a 2012 film directed by Josh Fuluce.

The film follows Ranger aimlessly wondering throughout middle earth on a journey to find a purpose and meaning. But one day he sees an elvin girl dancing in a woods. There they fall in love. But their love is not approved by her father. There are three elves left in the woods and he doesn’t want his daughter marrying a man. So he offers him a deal. If he can steal a gem from the dragon’s cavern to return life to the forest, he can marry his daughter. Of course, this is meant to send the ranger to his certain death, but the young man is willing to defy the odds.

So let’s start with the good here. The writing is wonderful. It hits all the right notes being enchanting, whimsical and epic at the same time. The acting is top notch. In some ways this could easily be smuggled into a Lord of The Rings films and you wouldn’t notice a difference in quality.

The bad? Everything in this film falls apart when it comes to special effects. The orcs look okay, and they most definitely deserve a cookie for trying. But the dragon? Its hits the scene where he enters the can and then jumps to where’s he’s running out of the cave with the stone. That is disappointing and cheap, as there was not dragon. And when the dragon came out to attack later, I was in total shock that it looked like plastic. After everything done so well, why couldn’t they find some other method than terrible CGI.

Overall this film is both wonderful and tormenting at the same time. It’s just so perfect and great on so many levels. But the dragon? It just hurts the film so much. I was going to give it three and a half flicks, but I have to knock it down a grade. It’s just a film I want to love so much, but they killed it. I still think it’s worth checking out, but consider yourself warned.

Recon 6 : An Incredibly Romantic Fantasy Pseduo Horror Kind of About Zombies

Short Film Theatre Recon 6

This is an odd little film I stumbled across It’s a fifteen minute 2011 short film directed by Blake Fraser for his final major project to graduate from college. And it’s a horror fantasy romantic pseudo comedy that is kind of about zombies. It’s called Recon 6.

The film is about a world where a new synthetic blood was used to save lives. But people who received the blood had a terrible side effect. Their flesh rots and they attack people. So a pill called Recon 6 was made to counter the side effects so people can live normal lives. The film focuses on a woman who wants to break free of her medication. Without it she feels free and more alive. And as she goes out on the town she meets a man who she thinks is like her because he wants to die. She convinces him there’s more to live for and the two end up going on a date. She’s sure she found someone she can relate to until she finds he’s manic depressive, not a zombie person. Then things go wrong as she realizes later she lost her medication and begins to rot.

The good? The film does something different with zombies. I mean zombies are such a worn out genre. I’m glad someone found something to make it seems fresh again. Acting, cinematography, and the story is great. The characters seem real. And at the end it’s a sweet little genre blender that had a little bit of everything.

The bad? It’s not that horrifying of a horror. This is about how people would out in the given circumstances and the film is very character driven.

Overall, this is surprisingly well made little film. I certainly hope Blake gets an “A.” The film is enjoyable and can appeal to a very broad audience. I recommend this to everyone.

The Curse of the Sad Mummy : A Beautiful Moving Painting Worth Checking Out

The Curse of the Sad Mummy

Okay. Someone told me to check this out. They told me to look into this amazing League of Legends Film. And I wasn’t willing didn’t believe it. I mean League of Legends? Really? But I couldn’t find anything one night, so I checked out the League of Legends film called The Curse of The Sad Mummy.

So what is the Curse of the Sad Mummy? It’s an animated film presented as a fairy tale format focusing on an adorable little mummy who is cursed to be eternally alone. The narrator sings a lullaby chronicling the mummy’s quest to find a friend.

The good? This film was a complete surprise. The film is so beautiful. Its CGI with a slight over lay of hand drawn animation. It is just so gorgeous. This has to be one of the most gorgeous animated films I’ve seen. The music is wonderful. The tale flows fluidly and tugs at some heart strings. Its just so darn good.

The bad? The film has nothing to do with League of Legends. So I was quite confused as to why the company is using this film to advertise of league of games. It’s quite baffling.

Overall the film is a masterpiece. If you love arty pieces and fairy tales you’ll love this. Who would have thought the League of Legends guys would makes something like this.

The Portal : A Witty Charming Fantasy Comedy About A Wizard Out of His Realm

The Portal

Wow. It’s been a long time since I had time to sit down and watch some short films. But I finally have night off end actually had a chance to see what’s going. I searched youtube and found a fantasy comedy called The Portal starring Tahmoh Penikett. It’s a 2014 film directed and written by Jonathan Williams.

The film follows a wizard who comes through a portal to this world. Why isn’t exactly clear. Maybe he took a wrong turn at Albuquerque or something. But when the portal closes, he can’t open it again. He must return but something is stopping his magic. Being a wizard from another world he’s unaccustomed to the ways of this world and pleasant nature of New Yorkers. He eventually finds a travel agency that he believes can get him back to his world. There he meets a ‘bored with her life,’ travel agent, sure she will be able to send him home.

The good? It’s a classic fish out of what fantasy in the vein of Just Visiting or Warlock, but still seemed fresh and new. The film is funny and charming. Tahmoh Penikett is actually funny here which is surprising since I only have seen him in serious roles. It’s well written and wonderfully produced.
The bad? Not much. This is a darn good little film.

Overall, the film is a fun little piece. If you like fantasy or comedy, you may want to check it out. It’s a whimsical little fantasy comedy that is most watch for most.

The Gate : A Scary Thought Provoking Horror

The Gate

Today for short film theatre we are traveling across the pond to review a spooky little British film. This one is on a 2013 film The Gate directed by Matt Westnap.

The film begin with an investigator explaining rare occurrences to an important figure. I want to say this is at the ministry of defense, but I know little about British current politics so I can’t say. Anyways they review various cases of people who are turning into monsters randomly. It turns out it’s a side effect of a prolonged usage of a black market drug and this side effects only occurs in a certain percentage of people. They close up the case by having shut down the website distributing this drug but that doesn’t mean people will go elsewhere on the black market to get the drug.

The good? The film is creepy. CGI is not the best, but the way it’s put together and concept of this very scary. The film is edited incredibly well made. And its incredibly well acted shot and written.

The bad? CGI is fair. Not amazing. But what bugged me is that the film is so incredibly grounded in reality yet the filmmaker went out of the way to make the police force wear these Robocop like suits. It took me out of film a little bit. It made it feel less like a reality and more like a fantasy.

Overall, this is an impressive and surprisingly creepy little film. It’s also a though provoking little piece. I recommend this to everyone. It’s just a darn good film.

The Seraphim Prophecies – Mystic

Today for short film theatre is a little fantasy, because I need some fantasy. I mean did you see the mid-season finale of the Walking Dead. Yeah. So I wanted to watch something wouldn’t bum me out. Today it is 2014 film by Mark Kreiner called The Seraphim Prophecies.

So what is it about? Well is starts with this girl who is carving a spell in stone. When she finished it causes a meteor shower. The girl and her dog see lightning strike the top of a hill where she makes an angel appear. But the angel is actually a demon who eats her? You know what? I don’t know what is going on here. I explained it the best I could.

The good? The film has a whimsical fantastical tone that flows well. The cinematography is great. The incredibly well shot and well produced.

The bad? It doesn’t make much sense. I couldn’t gleam any story form it. Also the CGI bits at the end are not that great.

Overall, this seemed like an experiment in film making rather than a film itself. It’s something that is pretty watch because it’s a film so well, but not worth your time. This is unfortunately a skip.

The Flying Man : A Flying Vigilante Delivers A Surprisingly Well Made Film

The Flying Man

I took a bit of a break with short film theatre and I apologize for that. Life gets busy sometimes, where I have no access to the computer. But now that things slowed down I return with a review of an odd superhero short film called The Flying Man by Marcus Alqueres.

The film is about a city experiencing an odd phenomenon. A man is flying through the sky snatching up criminals and killing them. Nobody knows anything about him, like here he came from, or even if he is human or not. The film follows two crooks who encounter the mysterious flying man.

The good? It is imaginative. Simple yet completely original. It’s well acted. The effect are great and the story are good.

The bad? Well the climax is disappointing. Given the buildup, I half expected a shoot out or something. The film just cuts away as the action begins instead.

Overall, the film is very good. It’s almost a must watch. If not for the lack luster climax it would have been. It’s still worth checking out from a narrative stand point though.

Peter Goes To Hell : A Classic Tale of a Deal Between A Man and the Devil

Peter Goes to Hell

Its Halloween, (Or it was. I realize how late this is going up.) so I decided to watch something scary or at least Halloween themed. And guess what, as I searched I found our recent friend and somewhat favorite of these reviews, Danny Dunlop made a Halloween short film called Peter Goes to Hell. And seeing how A Short Story and Dear Eva was incredibly well made films, I thought I would give this a chance.

The film focuses on Peter. A teenage trouble maker, who is visited by the devil. They chat and the devil says he needs his help on Halloween for a simple task. Peter reluctantly agrees with and from there, things go south.

The good? It’s a clever little flick. It may be predictable to appoint, but this is all smartly done. Also since Danny’s previous films were all narration, I was impressed by the good acting and great soundtrack.

The bad? The camera work is all or mostly natural lighting which left a few scenes grainy. Also the part where he goes to hell, is disappointing as the film switches over to black and white in an empty room with very fake looking fire effects.

Overall, its an incredibly well made fun dark little piece that is fun to watch. Though its low budget, it cleverly made, making up for any effects. So I recommend this to everyone.

The Little Mermaid : A Dark Grim Take on The Classic Tale

The Little Mermaid

Today for short film theatre we’re staying in the land of fairy tales. But this time it’s not a dancing musical, but is an incredibly dark adaption of The Little Mermaid. Directed by Nicholas Humphries the film is called The Little Mermaid (Not that original of a name) that was made in 2012.

The film takes place at what appears to be 1940s in the somewhat dying freak show where the only attraction is a mermaid. She is held against her will by an evil and sinister show runner who will keep her forever to make as much money as he can. But desperately wanting revenge as well as freedom, the mermaid comes up with a plan to get back at the evil man.

The good? The mermaid is a monster here. She has sharp teeth, gills stretching across her face and eats meat. She’s animalistic, wild with shreds of humanity bleeding through here and there. I appreciate that they went against the traditional fish lady. Also the special effects are great. It’s very dark, grim, and bloody.

The bad? I kind of wished there was more. There should have been more I felt. Like what happens after the ending. How did the mermaid get there? I guess we’ll never know

Overall, it’s a beautiful dark amazing film. It’s a true fairy tale horror, that every fairy tale and horror fan should watch.
